Illinois experiencing 6th warmest winter

State climatologist Jim Angel says this year's winter so far is about 10 degrees warmer than last year.

Two-thirds of the way into the season, and Illinois is enjoying its 6th warmest winter since 1895, according to State Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey.

For January 2012, the statewide average temperature for Illinois was 31.4 degrees, which is 6.6 degrees above normal and the 13th warmest January on record. The warmest reading for the month was 69 degrees at Belleville and Kaskaskia on January 6 and at Cairo on January 18. The coldest reading for the month was -6 degrees at Elizabeth and Galena on January 12.

1.   36.8° F in 1932
2.   34.7° F in 2002
3.   33.8° F in 1950
4.   33.55° F in 1934
5.   33.45° F in 1933 and 1983
6.   33.4° F in 2012
7.   32.7° F in 1989 and 2007
8.   32.5° F in 1960 and 1992
9.   32.3° F in 1941
10. 32.1° F in 1939
