USDA: Illinois organic production worth $27.8 million
A new survey released by USDA shows organic crop and livestock production in Illinois pales in comparison to California.
John Hawkins
Published: Oct 4, 2012
Illinois' 127 organic farms produced only $27.8 million in gross sales in 2011, compared to California's total sales worth nearly $1.4 billion. California produces and sells roughly 40% of all organic farm production in the nation, USDA says.
The vast majority of Illinois' organic farms produce vegetables, while 26 farms raise organic livestock. Just 14 farms in the state account for 53% of all organic sales.
USDA says organic crops and livestock in Illinois are produced on 28,763 acres - or 0.0011% of Illinois' total cropland.
