Tractor sales up in September
Sales impact of drought not expected to show until early next year.
John Hawkins
Published: Oct 10, 2012
Retail sales of farm tractors in the US and Canada rose 3.4% last month, driven by strong growth in high-horsepower models.
Unit sales of two-wheel drive tractors with engines above 100 horsepower climbed 15%, says the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. Four-wheel drive tractors typically used on large row crop farms increased 11%.
Meanwhile, sales of combines continued to rebound against easy year-ago comparison figures, rising 22% in September.
Because of long lead times for equipment orders, manufacturers say the impact of this summer's drought on the
machinery market isn't likely to show up in sales activity until late in the year and into early 2013.
