One-third of Illinois corn and soybeans rated poor-very poor

Last week's 100+ degree weather withered crop ratings across Illinois and the Midwest. Only 26% of Illinois' corn and 28% of the soybeans are rated this week as good-excellent.

The Illinois Ag Statistics Service reports that crop conditions for the state's crops plummeted sharply as a result of last week's record-breaking dry heat.  The percentage of Illinois corn in good to excellent condition dropped 11 points from a week ago; soybeans fell by 7 points.

Topsoil moisture statewide was rated 52% very short, 37% short, and 11% adequate.  Subsoil moisture was rated 49% very short, 41% short, and 10% adequate.

Forty-six percent of the corn crop is silking this week, well ahead of the 15% long-term average. One-quarter of the state's soybeans are blooming, also well ahead of schedule.

The state's soybean crop is rated 28% good-excellent, 41% fair and 31% poor-very poor.

Here are corn ratings for Illinois and surrounding states:

State  Ex/Gd  Fair  Poor-V. Poor
IL      26%  41%  33%
IN   19%  31%  50%
IA   62%  28%  10%
MO   18%  34%  48%
KY  20%  32%  48%

With 105 degree + temps it is amazing how much corn is literally drying up each day that even a rain won't help dead corn.
