House Ag Panel approves Farm Bill

The 35-11 committee vote comes three weeks after the Senate passed its own version and shifts the focus to the full House as Congress seeks to come up with a consensus bill before the current farm bill expires at the end of September.

Illinois Farm Bureau today praised the U.S. House Agriculture Committee for completing its markup of the 2012 Farm Bill. “We commend the House Agriculture Committee for successfully marking up its version of the bill. We urge the House leadership to schedule floor time as soon as possible so that the bill can be moved through the full House and into conference with the Senate,” said Philip Nelson, IFB President.

Specifically, IFB acknowledged the work of three members of the Illinois delegation who serve on the House Agriculture Committee: U.S. Rep. Timothy Johnson (IL-15); U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14); and U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling (IL-17).

House debate on the bill is timely; as Congress determines the future of crop insurance and a safety net for farmers, crops and livestock in southern Illinois continue to feel the effects of a drought that is widely being compared to the drought of 1988. During more than a year of policy review from June 2010 to August 2011, IFB members agreed that crop insurance is by far the most valuable component of the farm policy safety net and should serve as the cornerstone of the 2012 Farm Bill.
