House abandons Farm Bill extension
Instead, House members are expected to vote this week on a livestock disaster aid package.

House leaders have decided to vote on a stand-alone drought-relief measure this week, forgoing any consideration of a wider farm bill, according to aides.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said Tuesday the House should simply take the drought relief provisions in the Senate-passed bill and send it back as a stand-alone measure. He said that the House approach targeted at livestock farmers would be unlikely to pass the Senate this week.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said "it strikes most of us that some kind of drought assistance clearing the Congress and getting to the president this week would be a good idea given the severity of conditions all across the central part of the country."
Until earlier Tuesday, the House had been scheduled to vote this week on a one-year extension to the 2008 farm bill, which would have also contained drought assistance for livestock producers.
