Expected rains may halt early corn harvest

Rains and winds from the remnants of Hurricane Isaac could cause lodging and ear drop in Illinois corn fields.

The remnants of Hurricane Isaac will move into central Missouri early Saturday, then track across central Illinois late Saturday night and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is expected to spread in from the south on Friday afternoon and Friday night, and continue over much of central and southern Illinois through most of the holiday weekend, before diminishing from west to east Sunday night.

Rainfall amounts are likely to exceed 2 inches over a large area, with potential for 3 to 6 inches along the track of the remnant low, and even locally higher amounts are possible. Such high rain amounts may cause some flooding, despite the ongoing drought. The heaviest rain is likely from late Friday night through Saturday. Gusty winds are also possible with thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening.
